BusinessThe aim of inteGREAT is to improve economic prosperity by promoting, enhancing and developing the image of Great Yarmouth. Business associations and organisations have been involved in helping to shape the projects and initiatives to achieve this aim. inteGREAT provides the funding to make significant improvements to the infrastrucure, buildings and supporting functions to help existing businesses develop and to attract further investment. By 2007, when the inteGREAT scheme and funding will be complete, the ecomomic growth will be self sustaining. Various measures have been included in the scheme to monitor progress and provide evidence of growth and to identify areas that may need more help on specific projects. One way of monitoring if we have been successful in attracting people to different areas is to collect data on 'footfall', or how many people walk past specific points. This information can be compared with different times of the day, with the previous month, or the same month on a previous year. The information will be useful in attracting new business ventures and for evaluating how successful the various information and signage measures have been to attract people to different quarters of the town. Another simple way of evaluating business growth is to monitor the number of vacant shops around the town. Many shops are of historic importance, particularly in King Street, Market Row and Broad Row and there is a programme of restoration to bring these premises back into use. Funds of up to 60% are available for restoration projects. See projects section of this site for more specific details.
