Last summer 2004, an extensive period of consultation took place on the Pedestrian Priority Measures (Marine Parade / Regent Road). The consultation process received an excellent response, with more than 2000 questionnaires being completed (out of more than 10,000 distributed), including 47 filled in on-line. Of these, some 44% added comments, and a further 78 letters were received.

The inteGREAT team would like to thank everyone who took part.

Many of the proposals enjoyed a high level of support. For example, 85% of respondents supported a separate lane for landaus and cyclists, and 81% were in favour of pedestrianising the rest of Regent Road. To help arrive at a preferred scheme, two decision-making consultation workshops were set up. These were attended by a broad crossrepresentation of people with an interest in the town, and who were most likely to be affected by the proposals. They included taxi, bus, landau and cycle group representatives; business representatives from Regent Road and Marine Parade; disabled and community groups; borough and county council officers; councillors and the police. During the workshops each of the key questions posed on the original questionnaire was debated, with those taking part aided considerably by the consultation responses.

The Pedestrian Priority Measures scheme has now reached final design, incorporating aspirations from the various consultations. Landscape architects have worked with the highway design team to produce a destinctive and innovative scheme, featuring high quality materials in a pedestrian-friendly open space.

Works begin in September 2005, for completion April 2006.
